Japanese has been taught at Belgian Gardens State School since 1991. Currently, Year 5, 6 and 7 students have 1.5 hours per week learning the written and spoken language and culture of Japan. We have regularly experienced visits by Japanese groups and enjoyed the benefits of Japanese Assistants in the classroom. For many years we have had a sister school relationship with a juku (cram school) in Nagoya. Year 7 students exchange penpal letters about 3 times a year and experience a Japanese homstay in July. The school has received many resources from our sister school and the cultural exchange has been very rewarding. Each year we hold a school-based Japanese Speech Contact and send 2 competitors in each year level to the District Japanese Speech Contest held in August. Japanese language learning is fun and students experience learning through various activities including, singing, playing quiz and board games or tradiitional Japanese games.
